![]() ![]() I often get the sense that some employees at ranger stations, especially stations far away from relatively obscure trails don't have all that much knowledge or experience regarding what someone may be asking them about. Some employees at the ranger station are probably more knowledgable and helpful regarding hiking routes than others. I agree that the concern raised about Kaiser Pass by the person you spoke with does not make sense. My family and I have had the Sample Meadows Campground (only accessible from Kaiser Pass Road) to ourselves several times, even during the summer. Once I was even out all day and night, covering many of the major trails and areas (took a wrong turn in the dark on the way back to camp) and didn't come across anyone. My experiences in the area have always been when Kaiser Pass Road is open, yet I have very rarely seen other people in the wilderness and have never seen a ranger in the wilderness. I am not an expert on permits nor have I talked much to rangers, but I have been to Kaiser Wilderness several times. Currently, I'm trying to reserve a permit for the Kaiser loop Trail starting at the upper Billy creek Trailhead. I called the Prather Ranger Station to ask if my permit would be approved but the lady said that it might not because Kaiser pass would still be closed. I have a 4 day backpack/snowshoe/fishing trip all planned out for Kaiser Wilderness next Saturday. ![]()
